To join this study, you must:

  • Be pregnant with one baby
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be 20 to 31 weeks and 6 days pregnant when you start the study
  • Have gestational diabetes diagnosed between 20 weeks and 31 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy
  • Need medication for glucose level management, with at least 30% high readings the week before joining
  • Be able to come back for a check-up 2 years later

For more information about the study, please contact the appropriate study team here.

Risks of joining DECIDE are similar to usual care for GDM. DECIDE tries to reduce risks, but these may happen:

  • If treated with insulin: low blood sugar, weight gain, needle injuries, discomfort or rash at skin injection sites.
  • If treated with metformin: mild nausea, loose stools, bloating, stomach discomfort (usually gets better in a few weeks), or metformin passing through the placenta to the baby.

Benefits of participation include the potential for improving standard of care for different populations with GDM. Both treatments offered by this trial (metformin and insulin) improve pregnancy outcomes for mothers and their babies. During your participation in the study, you will have the opportunity to receive ongoing education, information, and updates about the findings and an opportunity to share your experiences with GDM.

For more information about the study, please contact the appropriate study team here.

Research participants will:

  • Be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to get either metformin or insulin for GDM treatment.
  • Fill out surveys at enrollment, 6 weeks after birth, and at 2 years after birth.
  • Do an interview at 6 weeks after birth (only some will be chosen for this).

The study team will work with your doctor to let them know which treatment you are getting and to help collect data during your pregnancy and after birth. Your doctor will manage your treatment based on standard of care for that medication.

Participants will receive these incentives:

  • $100 at the start
  • $50 at 6 weeks after birth
  • $125 at 2 years after birth
  • An extra $50 for those who are chosen for and do an interview at 6 weeks after birth
